Empowering Education in Fragile Communities: A Unified Leadership Driving Teacher Professionalism and Sustainable Learning in Borno State.

In April 2026, PLAN International Nigeria, in collaboration with Unique Care and Support Foundation, successfully trained, inducted and licensed 359 teachers from Borno State through the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, marking a significant stride in strengthening education systems within conflict-affected communities.

This initiative was strategically designed to improve the quality of basic education and professionalize the teaching workforce in insurgency-impacted areas, particularly Damboa, Kala-Balge, and Mobbar. By equipping teachers with standardized qualifications and licensing, the program reinforces the role of education as a stabilizing force in rebuilding communities and restoring social systems.

The induction and certification ceremony, which held at the Mohammed Indimi International Conference Hall, University of Maiduguri, celebrated the successful passage of all 359 teachers in the TRCN Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE), affirming their competence and alignment with national standards.

The initiative also aligns with the Federal Government’s directive mandating that all teachers be registered and licensed by 2027, with a projected 75% compliance rate by 2026. Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria were present to commend the program as a vital contribution to improving teacher accountability and educational outcomes across Nigeria.

A defining highlight of the event was the presence of the Executive Director of ROHI Foundation, Dr. Naomi Andrew Haruna who was specially invited to the ceremony. In a unique convergence of leadership and purpose, she also serves as Deputy Director at the Centre for the Study and Promotion of Cultural Sustainability, University of Maiduguri, a role that underscores her deep commitment to bridging education, culture and sustainable development.

Her participation as an honored guest not only symbolized institutional support but also reflected a broader vision: that quality education must go beyond certification to include culturally grounded, community-responsive learning systems. Through both the Centre and the ROHI Foundation, she continues to champion initiatives that strengthen teacher capacity, promote inclusive education and sustain local knowledge systems as critical components of long-term development.

This alignment of roles highlights a powerful synergy, where academic insight meets grassroots impact. By supporting teacher training and professional development, the ROHI Foundation reinforces its commitment to advancing equitable and quality education, particularly in underserved and post-conflict settings. Ultimately, this milestone is more than a ceremonial achievement; it is a reaffirmation that education, when driven by committed leadership and collaborative action, remains one of the most transformative tools for rebuilding communities, preserving cultural identity and securing a sustainable future.
